About us
Northern Research Institute Tromsø (Norut Tromsø) is a national research institute comprising four research groups:
Tromsø Science Park.
- Biotechnology (BIO)
- Information and Communication Technology (IKT)
- Earth Observation (JOBS)
- Social Science Research (ST)
Norut Tromsø carries out contract research for industry, the business sector and public administration, the Norwegian Research Council. The Norwegian Space Centre, The Barents Programme, and international clients including the EU Research Programme, ESA, Inter-regional programmes (Interreg) and others.

Norut is a leading research community which supplies services of high quality and practical applicability for its clients. The institute is characterised by a multidisciplinary approach to the social sciences and technology, and has particular expertise in the Northern and Arctic regions.
Our ambition is that research shall have practical and proficient results, and with a commercial potential when relevant.
Norut Tromsø is located in Tromsø Science Park. We are a subsidiary company in which the University of Tromsø is the major shareholder. The institute has four research groups, and a staff of ca. 60 persons.
Norut Tromsø is a merger of three previous research institutes - Norut Information Technology Ltd., Norut Social Science Research Ltd. and Norut Group Ltd. Consequently, Norut has solid experience with contract research dating back to the start of the research foundation at the University of Tromsø (Forut) in 1984.
