In this project we test and adapt the prototype software of an ice-ocean discrimination algorithm (Haarpaintner, 2008) for dual-polarized Radarsat-2 synthetic aperture radar. The prototype software has first been tested individually on HH and HV images to evaluate the difference between co- and crosspolarization. HV showed a much clearer contrast between ocean and sea ice than HH, but because of the very low backscatter level in HV images, antenna pattern effects occur as sinusoidal variations in the range direction, especially in the far range. Nevertheless, the algorithm has been successfully adapted to Radarsat-2 and results are improved by the dual-polarized capabilities. The new algorithm should be more robust and more sensor, seasonal and weather independent. A reliable confidence level estimation was also included in the algorithm.
