Chasing sunrays and snow albedo

A group of researchers from Norway travelled to the summit of the Greenland Ice Sheet to make measurements of solar radiation and snow albedo. See video.

Norut took part in the project by using UAV's (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) for measuring albedo.

The project is called VAUUAV and the aim is to collect data to improve climate models and satellite observations.

Albedo is an important factor in global warming, but nobody knows exactly how important it is.

The institutes participating in the projects were NILU - Norwegian Institute for Air Research, Norut - Northern Research Institute and Norwegian Polar Institute. The project was funded by the Norwegian Research Council.
