Web centric services get increasingly more popular, mainly due to the possibility of renting a complete service with a minimum of administrative effort for the customer. Web based services can non the less have several weaknesses compared to local solutions. In the web based services where the users themselves produce large amounts of data, such as rich media and video, it is critical that these can be quickly and efficiently exchanged with the data storage. When the storage is centralised, such as in the current web services, this puts large demands on the communication infrastructure and the central server systems. User data must also be stored for an extended period of time, creating a continually expanding challenge for the service provider.

In DeStore we wish to solve these issues by developing a decentralised storage solution under central control. This will offer the users the same low administrative costs one associates with web based solutions and at the same time offer high performance and response through local storage. In other words we want to combine the best of centralised and decentralised solutions to develop a hybrid especially adapted for web based services.

We plan to test DeStore as a new storage platform for a web based Learning Management System (LMS) ? "ClassFronter". A decentralised storage solution will give Fronter a considerable competitive advantage compared to locally managed systems and will enable Fronter to deliver a service that will scale for a larger user group and for a future use with substantial more multimedia contents. Several suppliers of web services have already identified the requirement for decentralised storage services. Since this is not solved by off-the shelve software but implies a substantial degree of research, no one has so far implemented a solution by themselves.
