Test and assessment of Norut’s ice-ocean SAR discrimination algorithm with L-band ALOS Palsar data.
In this project we adapted and Norut’s prototype software of an ice-ocean discrimination algorithm (Haarpaintner, 2008) for dual-polarized Radarsat-2 synthetic aperture radar (Haarpaintner, 2009). An additional task is to test this algorithm on L- and X-band SAR data. No X-band SAR data was available at the time of this work, so the algorithm has only been tested on L-band ALOS Palsar data. However, since we had access to some polarimetric ALOS Palsar data, we tested the algorithm on all 2-band combinations of the 4 polarizations (HH, HV, VH, VV) which are HH/HV, HH/VH, HH/VV, HV/VH, HV/VV, and VH/VV as well as on fine beam dual data (HH/HV). It showed that the algorithm can well separate ocean and sea ice from L-band ALOS Palsar data as long as at least one cross-polarization is used. This confirms that the algorithm is robust and also SAR-sensor and frequency independent, at least for C- and L-band. |
